🎨 The Art of Becoming: Curating the Museum of You
Sometimes the best creative ideas don't start with paper, paint, or a new supply. They start with a conversation. This month's theme actually began with my fellow junk journaler and junk journal club co-conspirator, Jade.
I seem to spend a lot of time thinking about creativity, life, the things I'm working toward and all of the changes that seem to happen while busy making other plans. She mentioned the idea of 'becoming her' for our club meet up - which got me to thinking about where we are in live; not so much reinventing ourselves or waking up tomorrow as some shiny new version of who we think we're supposed to be, but paying attention to the person we're already becoming.
And August felt like exactly the right time to explore it.
We're past the true midpoint of the year now. January's enthusiasm has worn off. Those resolutions, goals, vision boards, words of the year, and big plans we made months ago may look a little different from where we're standing today. And that's okay.
Maybe you've accomplished something you weren't sure you could. Maybe something you desperately wanted in January doesn't matter nearly as much anymore. Maybe life threw you a curveball. Maybe you've discovered something completely new that you want. Or maybe you've been so busy living your life that you haven't stopped long enough to notice how much has changed.
That's what The Art of Becoming is about.
It's not a report card on the first half of your year. There are no gold stars for completing all your goals and absolutely no shame if some of them haven't moved an inch. Instead, we're going to spend August getting curious.
Who am I right now? What brought me here? What matters to me? What am I ready to leave behind? What brings me joy? And where would I like to go from here?
And, because we're us, we're going to explore all of that with paper, scissors, glue, ephemera, and probably a ridiculous number of tiny pockets.
🏛️ Week One: Curate Your Life Like a Museum
I absolutely fell in love with this idea. Imagine for a moment that someone handed you the keys to an empty museum and told you: This museum is about your life. You are the curator. What are you putting on display?
Not what should be there. Not what would impress visitors. Not just the graduations, weddings, promotions, vacations, awards, and traditionally "important" moments.
What actually belongs in the museum of you? Maybe there's an entire gallery dedicated to people who changed your life. Maybe there's an exhibit about a difficult season you survived.
There might be a display case containing completely ordinary objects that mean everything to you, a handwritten recipe, a concert ticket, your grandmother's button, a child's drawing, a postcard, a scrap of fabric, or a photograph nobody else would understand.
Your museum might have a soundtrack.
It might have a library.
It might have an entire wing devoted to unfinished dreams.
And there should absolutely be room for the weird stuff!
What Would Your Exhibits Be?
This week, I want you to think like a curator. You might create exhibits around your greatest adventures, lessons learned, people who changed you, tiny treasures, creative chapters, or even dreams that are still unfolding. But don't feel limited by my categories.
Maybe you need a Things That Made Me Laugh Until I Cried exhibit.
Or Terrible Decisions That Eventually Made Great Stories.
Or a gallery devoted to Things I Can't Believe I Actually Did.
This is your museum and that's really the point.
Your Life Isn't Just the Highlight Reel
There's another reason I love this exercise. When we look backward, we're often tempted to judge our lives by accomplishments.
What did I finish? What did I achieve? How far did I get?
But a museum doesn't only display finished things. Museums preserve fragments. Sketches. Letters. Experiments. Objects whose importance wasn't understood until years later.
Our lives are like that, too.
Some things are masterpieces.
Some are still sketches.
Some are artifacts from versions of ourselves we've outgrown.
And some are works in progress that aren't ready for their gallery wall yet.
They all belong to the story.

📖 Inside My Journal: Around the World Adventures
This week, I finally finished my Round 2 Sisterhood Shuffle journal pages, and this round took me Around the World! My project became a colorful collection of bucket-list adventures, places I'm dreaming about visiting, and all those wonderful experiences I hope someday make it out of the "maybe someday" category and into real life. From Paris and Italy to Machu Picchu, an African safari, Alaska whale watching, the Taj Mahal, and so many places in between, I had so much fun creating each little adventure and imagining myself there.
If you're new here, Sisterhood Shuffle is a free creative snail-mail community I created to help women connect through art, journaling, and good old-fashioned happy mail. Participants are placed into small groups, create pages for their fellow "sisters," and send them through the mail. In return, you receive handmade pages from women all over the country, and sometimes the world, to add to your own journal. The creative styles and skill levels are all different, and that's part of what makes it special. It's not about creating the most elaborate page; it's about showing up for one another, sharing a little piece of yourself, and building community through creativity.
For Round 2, our theme was Around the World Adventures, and my contribution became my own little Bucket List Adventures collection. I created illustrated versions of myself exploring the places I'd love to see, added fun facts and little details about each destination, and tucked plenty of personality into the pages. Now they're packed up and ready to begin their own journey through the mail.
And honestly, that's one of my favorite things about Sisterhood Shuffle: I may have finished my pages, but the project isn't finished. Soon, pieces of other women's stories and creativity will start arriving in my mailbox—and eventually all those individual pages will become one wonderfully imperfect journal that none of us could have created alone.
That's what the Shuffle is really about: creating separately, connecting together. ❤️
